My new family's country of origin: Greece
5 ways I will prepare myself to be culturally responsive:
- I will research Greek family culture and traditions
- I will prepare the classroom and make sure that culturally appropriate materials are visible so that the child can feel welcome in the classroom
- I will speak to the class about Greece and the upcoming arrival of the new student
- I will find out as much information about the student as I can prior to their arrival
- I will do anything else that I can to make sure the student and the family feel comfortable
In doing all these things in preparation, I hope to make the family and child feel comfortable and welcome as much as possible. I want them to realize that we are educating ourselves on their traditions and customs and will respect them. I think that doing all of these things will be a great benefit because, if the family feels comfortable, we can communicate about their child and education. This will also help the student and family's transition to be a smoother one into a new school. This will also benefit me as a caregiver/teacher to speak honestly and openly with the parents and feel comfortable in doing so.
Hi Christina,
ReplyDeleteI also chose to find out more information about the culture of the family moving in as well. I think it is important for the EC professional to feel knowledgeable about the child's culture. I think that finding something to remind the child of home is a great idea. I also liked that you would teach the new culture to your students before the new child comes into class. This is a great way to make them more understanding of the new child.
Hi Christina,
ReplyDeleteI think preparing for a child and his/her family's arrival is a great thing. There is nothing like making sure your guest feels comfortable in your home or classroom. I did not think to teach my other students about the country in which the new child would be coming from before he/she arrived. This was a great idea. I think the children would be more accepting of that child when he/she arrives because they would have some idea about that child's culture. I agree with you when you mentioned that the family would be more open to communicate about their child if they feel comfortable. Good post!
Hi Christina,
ReplyDeleteAs Kerrian mentioned, it is a great idea to teach the class about the country which the new student will be coming from. To be aware will help the children to form relationships with each other. The ways in which you would prepare has also helped me to expand on the things I would be able to do for a new family.
